Dr Katherine Antel is a Specialist Physician and Clinical Haematologist, she obtained her medical degree with distinction in the pre-clinical and clinical examinations from the University of Cape Town in 2007. She went on to specialise in internal medicine and obtained her specialist qualification (FCP(SA) in 2014. Subsequently, she sub-specialised in Clinical Haematology at UCT, where she gained experience in the laboratory diagnostics and management of benign and malignant haematological conditions (such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma), and in bone marrow transplantation.

She is the recipient of several awards for both undergraduate and postgraduate medical training including the prestigious US National Institutes of Health Fogarty Fellowship, and an Academic Excellence Award from the Discovery Foundation. Her research interests are in the field of lymphoma. The over-arching interest of her research has been to define a clinical algorithm for the investigation of lymphadenopathy in order to decrease the time to diagnosis of lymphoma in a TB-endemic setting such as South Africa.

Katherine joined the Constantiaberg team in 2018. She feels strongly that patients deserve not only the best possible medical care but that attention needs to be given to the person as a whole and that this can only be offered within a multi-disciplinary team. She will go the extra mile for her patients, both with gentleness and kindness but also with a keenness for seeking out the best possible medical management including motivating for new drugs from the medical aids.

Katherine is married to Paul and they have two children, Iris and Theo. When she’s not at work she can be found running on the road or in the mountain (where she loves to run far, look out for her at the Two Oceans and Comrades!), with her nose buried in fiction, or spending quality time with her family.
