Dr Waseem Hawa

Waseem Hawa is a clinical psychologist at Serenity Clinic in Observatory, Cape Town. He gained his Bachelor of Social Sciences with a major in Social Work in 2002 and made the Dean’s Merit List at the University of Cape Town. He then completed his Honours degree in Social Work the following year. Waseem practised as a social worker and served as the program coordinator at Margaret’s House Children’s Home, where he was involved in the development of therapeutic milieu for the home, as well as psychological guidance for staff members. He also served as a coordinator at the Welcome Club - a psychosocial rehabilitation centre. Before moving to the field of Psychology, Waseem was a Group Facilitator in the Department of Medical Sciences at the University of Cape Town. He was also a part-time lecturer at the University between 2004 and 2006 in the Department of Social Development, while simultaneously completing his Honours Degree in Psychology. Waseem Hawa gained his Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology in 2011 at the University of the Western Cape. His belief in providing patient-centred, individualized care has led him to continuously push his education further, and strengthen his skills for patient assessment and treatment. His education and experience provide a high level of clinical competence that he applies to every patient. After completing his Master’s Degree in Psychology, Waseem served as a clinical psychologist at the Breede River Department of Correction Services where he offered clinical services to two of the five Correctional Centers located in the Breede River Management Area. These services included individual and group therapy, psycho-education and risk assessment. Waseem played a key role in the Victim Offender Dialogues. Initially, his role included serving as the lead mental health practitioner on the Peace Train, and during the victim-offender dialogue. He developed and coordinated mental health services to the 67 survivors of the Worcester Shoprite bombing in 1996, as well as to the survivors aboard the train and at the dialogue in Pretoria. These consisted of a structured group work model and individual sessions. Waseem is currently responsible for the provision of the Psychological services to the Male Acute Unit of Lentegeur Psychiatric Hospital. This includes the management and administrative coordination of the larger Psychology Program for the entire unit, as well as the supervision of a community Clinical Psychologist who is also appointed in the unit. His direct clinical services include group, family and individual therapy to the patients admitted to the unit, as well as the psychometric and neuropsychological assessment of referred patients. As the hospital is a training institution, his responsibilities also include the supervision of intern psychologists as well as the training and teaching of Health Sciences students in Medicine, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy attending the Tygerberg Medical campus of Stellenbosch University.
